1st Pet Memorial Mile

Mon Valley Paws held their first annual Pet Memorial Mile at the DiVirgilio Sports Complex. It was the perfect setting to celebrate and honor our precious loved companions. The heartfelt loss of losing your friend of many or just a few years was shared by all who attended the event.

Michael’s Ovation partnered with MVP to create the Michael Shaffer Memorial Rainbow Bridge. Michael was a young man that loved music, reading, animals, and bike riding. The attendees were able to purchase a pet collar, write their pets name on it, and attach it to the railings – all to raise money for MVP’s partnered rescues. Many owners snapped on more than one collar for dogs and cats alike. It was a joint effort to assemble, paint and add pawprints to best represent the Rainbow Bridge. A garden of different flowers and memorials was the perfect added touch.

Two of MVP’s partnered rescues were in attendance. Hound Haven of Lone Pine is a small inhouse nonprofit rescue and sanctuary specializing in hounds and beagles.  They focus on dogs overlooked by other rescues, especially those with medical needs. All But Furgotten is dedicated to rehabilitating neglected and abandoned animals while advocating against cruelty through education and community empowerment. As one of the few rescues in Westmoreland County responding to humane cases, their volunteer officers conduct investigations, seize endangered pets, and endure lengthy court trials—all while bearing the financial weight to keep animals safe and cared for.

Pet Supplies Plus in Belle Vernon once again rose to the occasion and donated the collars. They also gave free samples and presented a $25 gift card to Jennifer Check and her dog Ruby Pickles for the best dog trick. DJ Jammin Jodi Yerkey offered her services to the event and did a wonderful job helping us with the music and announcements.

The memorial walk was quiet and somber as the many participants began their trek around the park. Many wore T shirts honoring their pet and those who came with their present canines enjoyed the walk together.  Plenty of refreshments and endless water was offered to pets and humans alike.

A special vigil was devoted to those owners who were victims of the Eternity Pet Cremation Services. Prayers and expressions of grief was voiced by the owners.

The walk ended as winners of the gift baskets; half the take and door prizes were announced. We at MVPaws look forward to the second annual Pet Memorial Mile. Thanks to all the Mon Valley Paws volunteers who made this event possible!
