Lisa Ward & Jackson
“I got Jackson from the Humane Animal Rescue a few months prior to the pandemic. He was found as a stray dragging his hind legs behind himself and brought to the shelter. It was love at first sight. I adopted him myself immediately. Jackson is a pug with possible chihuahua mix. The veterinarian established his age to be about 8 years old at the time. We were not sure what happened to his back legs but the veterinarian at the time referred to it as a possible spinal injury and referred us to an orthopedic veterinarian at PVSEC. Then the pandemic hit, and we all went into lockdown. Unfortunately, our appointment was cancelled. We fitted him for a wheel cart, and he quickly adapted.
Jackson never showed any signs of pain during this time. He was a happy boy since day one and was always very active, even with his cart. Nothing was slowing him down. All the wheel cart pugs we care for receive a gentle leg massage and exercise to prevent the muscles from atrophying from non-use. Jackson received the same treatment.
One day he was at the water bowl and stood up on his hind legs unaided. It was only for a few seconds, and I wasn’t sure I saw it. The next day it happened again. Then again and again. As the days progressed, he would stand on his hind legs more often and for longer periods of time. It took many months, almost a year, and he was walking independently.
We still do not know what caused his ailment, all I know is how proud I am of him. I love watching him walk and run on his own albeit a little wobbly. He no longer needs his wheel cart. I never thought this day was possible.
He is my very special little baby bear. I love caring for the all the pets who cross our path, but many come and go, that is the nature of this job. I think of myself as their caregiver while on this earth. Jackson has become the ambassador of our site. He is so good with the new dogs when they arrive. I know my little Jackson will remain by my side always. I think it is important to have someone special to hold onto as my very own. I am so in love with him!”
