Benny’s Story
Stephanie Moscoe is the proud parent of Benny. Mon Valley Paws was able to assist in the recovery of Benny with Emergency Grant money. We are proud to tell his journey.
Benny was found at 2 months old at the Dollar General in Monessen. We had reasons to believe he had been thrown from a vehicle.
An amazing vet tech from Akeso Veterinary Clinic was asked to help and she of course did. He stayed at the vet office for almost 2 months before we saw him. They had reached out to rescues to see if they would help and unfortunately no one stepped up due to back legs being deformed.
Stephanie Mosco, founder of Among the Wildflowers Sanctuary, happen to be at the vet office helping with bottle babies, when she met Benny. She agreed to take him in and try to help him.
We knew his back legs were not right and he would need to see an orthopedic specialist to see if we could do anything to improve his quality of life. We also soon learned that Benny couldn’t go potty on his own and would need expressed for life.
We are used to special needs with paralyzed dogs, but this was our first kitten. We made an orthopedic appointment, and we found out that one leg would need to be amputated and that his other leg may never be used but he still got around just fine so set the surgery date for when he was six months old.
We started looking for funding to help with the costs and found Mon Valley Paws grants! It was just what we needed to help with the $1000 surgery. We filled out the simple application and we were approved! They called it right in to the orthopedic vet and it was ready for us on the day of surgery! It was comforting knowing that half of it was paid for! Thank you Mon Valley Paws!
Benny is now Thriving!! His right rear leg was successfully amputated, and he is now actually using the leg the doctors said he would “never” be able to use. We express him to go potty and he does wear washable diapers to help with leaking, but we have paralyzed dogs with the same issue, so he just fits right in here. He does however think he is a Chihuahua and not a cat. 😂
Special needs babies aren’t harder, they are just different. And they can thrive! Benny and other babies here at Among the Wildflowers Sanctuary are living proof!
