NATIONAL LOST PET PREVENTION MONTH

JULY 1-31, 2025

July is not only the height of summer, but it’s also National Lost Pet Prevention Month! This month-long observance was created to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our furry friends safe and sound. Did you know that approximately 10 million pets go missing each year in the US alone? In the United States, July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. It is largely because the loud celebrations of the Fourth of July can startle pets, causing them to flee at a moment’s notice.

In addition, families take more trips during the summer. Pets that are taken along for the ride may be stressed by their new environment, causing them to run away. That’s why it’s so important to take preventative measures and educate ourselves on how to keep our beloved pets from getting lost. So let’s celebrate this month by spreading awareness and making sure all pets are accounted for and loved!

  •  Microchip your pet and keep it registered
  • Use up to date ID tags
  • Train your dog with a solid recall
  • Pet proof your home
  • Avoid off leash walks
  • Plan ahead for any noisy events
  • Supervise your pet at all times
  • Spay and neuter your pets
  • Use a GPS collar or smart tag
  • Double check fence lines and gates

July is designated as the National Lost Pet Prevention month, but your pet may become lost any time of the year. Follow the suggested preventative measures listed in hopes your pet may never lose its way from home.
